ICYMI: JOANN's Is Going Away...

Hey there Reader โ
So by now we've all heard the news...
500 JOANN's locations will be closing, and you check here to see if yours is on the list:
With that being said, you might be wondering where the heck do I shop for fabric now?! Don't worry, I have a list of my 4 favorite places to shop for some beautiful fabrics that are all online! These are places I have made purchases from and have been satisfied with what I received, along with having the notions needed to finish my designs! I've also included links to 10 more stores to shop online as well.
Now...I know this is heartbreaking news for many of us. JOANN's is the only sewing and craft supply store for many rural areas along with being an affordable option for many people. The loss of this establishment in many areas means the loss of the craft economy as well. I myself get the majority of my workshop fabric at my local JOANN's, along with minor notions for projects. Here in Denton we are lucky enough to have a Michael's, but it's just not going to be the same. I've seen lots of people buzzing about shopping at their LQS (Local Quilt Shops). However, many of these aren't affordable options, have strange hours, or the staff may not be the most friendly (I'm working on a substack post about why Gen Z's probably won't shop at their LQS post JOANNs ๐). Regardless of where you land on the 5 stages of grief over the loss of JOANNs, your feelings are valid, and know we are all heartbroken with you.
As always, if you ever have questions, please don't hesitate to email me, send me a DM, or reach out! (Or you can send a messenger otter! ๐๐ฆฆ)
This shop has been my go to for over a year. The Canadian retailer has a beautiful array of notions, fabric, kits, and patterns all ethically sourced and absolutely adorable! The fabric is measured in meters, and prices are listed in half meters. Shipping is a true 7 days, so be sure to give yourself ample time to have it delivered. As of now, there is no additional tariff's on orders under $800.

This easy and affordable website has probably just over a thousand types of fabrics at an affordable price. One thing I recommend when shopping here is order swatches before you buy yardage. Sometimes the fabric isn't what you thought it would be or may not work for your project. Save the extra swatches in a book so you can reference them for future projects! Shipping is a true 7 days, so be sure to give yourself ample time to have it delivered. Oh! And they have quilting cotton!
"Alright designers, let's go to mood!" was one of my first introductions to a fabric store other than JOANNs. They have countless options to shop fine fabrics all the way to muslin for toiles. Again, as with any online shop, I always suggest you order some swatches before buying. What is also nice, is when you order a certain number of swatches, you get muslin at a discount. So it's a win win! Mood also have lots of notions, thread, and tools that you might need when you're sewing. They also have hundreds of free patterns for you to sew and a fabric estimator feature!
Last year's Mood Collaboration I did where I sewed a holiday inspired coat out of twill!
I still dream of this prism fabric and wish I could make 100 things in it!

Another small shop that sells high quality natural fiber based fabric. Perfect for the sustainable sewist in your life! Their system of buying fabric is in half yard increments, so a quantity of 2 means 1 yard of fabrics. Remember how I keep mentioning swatches? Well these guys do 5 free swatches if you pay for shipping! It's a great way to see if you like the look and feel of fabric for a few projects!

December 2024 Hey there sewing bestie โ It's the holiday season! This holiday season has already been jam packed with so much insanity it has my head spinning already! I've traveled to Long Beach, CA for a conference, we spent a week in Arkansas for family, and I have plans of spending some quality craft time with my grandparents before my break is over. As we move through this busy season of giving, spending time with family and friends, the parties and food, I hope you can find a little...
June 2024 Hey there sewing bestie โ It's me, hi! The past month has been a whirlwind. I've started grad school, traveled, wrapped up another semester of teaching, and overall just life things. The word busy doesn't even sum it up! This summer has just begun, and I already feel behind. But, all the hustle meant I got an A in both of my research methods classes for grad school! I will absolutely be taking a Saturday to hang by the pool and drink a pretty drink. ๐น โ๏ธ As we move into summer, I've...
